COMMENT: Technology and Arrowhead's 1 to 1 Program

COMMENT: It is clear that technology is an essential part of our learning; through our most recent research project, it is evident that iPads, laptops, nooks, and technical devices can improve our ability to learn in the classroom.  For the sole purpose of reading fiction and non-fiction texts in an English/Language Arts classroom, do you believe nooks, the devices you just utilized in the Academy, are MORE effective in YOUR understanding of the text versus the traditional paperback book? Explain. As a result of reading from the nook, would you recommend all students at AHS to purchase texts electronically in the future? Explain your position.  Also, if high schools, colleges, and universities are moving in this direction, do you feel that this experience was beneficial?

  1. Using the nook was different. I wouldn't say that it was more effective. Writting on the nook, or taking notes, was really difficult. The keybord that you have to type on was small and didn't connect to the touch that you made. The reading part of the nook was nice tho. I liked that I only had to carry around that little nook.I also liked that book rememberd where you left. I dont really think it made me understand the book better tho, I think I would understand just as much as I wouldve when I read it from a paper back. I don't know if I would recommend the nook to all Arrowhead students. If you have to take notes then I wouldn't recommend the nook. If your just reading the book then I would suggest the nook. I think that this experience of using electronics is beneficial to us for the future. None of the other classes uses computers all the time, not all classes get to use tablets, laptops, or other devices. I think it will benefit us.

  2. I am glad that I got the experience of using the nook. It was hard to get used to, but I eventually got used to it. I thought it was more effective for me because I was able to highlight passages and key words. It was also nice to be able to look up words that I didn't know what they meant. In a regular book, I wouldn't be able to do that. Being able to highlight things and look up words helped me understand the book better. I would recommend people at AHS to buy a nook because I believe that they help people understand the book better. I think that using a nook would be a great experience for people, but it depends on the person whether they want to use it or not. I think that if schools are moving in the direction of technology, using the nook and other devices have been really beneficial for us. I feel like we are more advanced in technology than many other kids at AHS. If we were to use these skills and devices in the future, we are probably going to be ahead of other kids, and I think that is beneficial for us.

  3. I don't know if i was a fan of the nook or not because yes it was "green" and you could store a lot of books but i was not a fan I forgot it every time and I never had it charged when I needed it so there i would like a regular book. I think if i changed my habits I would be fine with it but i just wasn't the biggest fan of it at the beginning so i would recommend it to other English classes.

  4. Personally I would much rather read a paperback book because it feels more natural and I am used to it. Since turning to nooks is "green" as Matt said, I feel we should turn to nooks and other electronic books. They have advantages over paperback including being able to store a hundred books on one handheld and not having to worry about ripping pages.

  5. I believe that we should stick with paper back books because don't get me wrong nooks were awesome and all but it makes the book three times longer and I just wasn't a big fan of them. If collages and high schools went to nooks or electronic books then I wouldn't be upset but I wouldn't be happy. I could deal with them and use them but Im just not a big fan.

  6. I guess the Nook is better. Even though you had to charge it and it takes forever to boot up, i still prefer it. None the less I'm a little reckless when it comes to keep things in tact within my backpack. So if acceptance was in book form and not in Nook form chances are it would have been destroyed within the first two days. I am pretty sure there are people just like me in college. So having students use a nook instead of a Book seems like a better idea

In all our research on one to one learning I do believe it is beneficial for education, but as I said in my letter I believe one to one should be introduced slowly at the start of every year. I think this because even though the teachers might think that every kid has a computer and will just understand one to one learning there might be a chance that there is just one kid who doesn’t. So I do think one to one learning is a good idea as long as it is introduced in the right way.
Also in my letter I researched what kind of technology would be best for one to one. I was testing between the iPad and Lenovo ThinkPad and through my tests discovered the iPad as being better as my research shows in my letter. I believe the iPad has some very great capabilities and is very light to carry, but over all I think that laptop is better for one to one learning because it has more capabilities and I think gets the job done quicker.

  8. I feel that Nooks are worse then paperback books because they make the book feel longer. When reading them they put the words from the book on to the page and can make the pages really be 2 pages long instead of 1. This is very frustrating. This then makes me less interested in the text. I would not recommend Nooks. If collages and Highschools switched in the future I wouldn't care because thats their idea and not mine so I will just have to live with it.

  9. Jacob Beres: Please add some more detail about the nook (See Prompt) in your response.

  10. I don't like using the nooks mainly because it made the book seem longer then it was and my nook couldn't hold a charge and i always would have to charge it during the group discussions I would rather use books in the future then nooks but I could still use a nook

  11. I would rather read paper books then online or on a Nook because I'd rather have the book in my hand and turn the page, it keeps me reading more.
I believe that AHS should get a device for each student because it would be easier for notes and getting on the Internet then going to a lab. If all schools (like high schools, and collages) do start to use devices more then it would be good for some people and bad for others. Some people are really bad at computers and others are amazing at them. It would be beneficial but I would rather have notebook paper and use computers for research.

  12. This was my first time ever using a nook. I thought it was very different and more difficult to take notes on it or connect to wifi. Unlike just writing in a notebook and taking notes you had to go through all these tabs and then like take your finger and highlight what you need and sometimes the touch screen wasn't very good. I don't think i would recommend it to all the Arrowhead high school students because it would cost a lot of money. I don't think it is that big of a deal to not have books. I like how the nook could change pages real quick with a click of a button. For a book sometimes the pages are ripped out or the pages or stuck together. So I would rather go with a book and notebook. But thanks for the opportunity Mrs. Miller. :)

  13. This type of learning is new to everyone, you need to be responsible and stay on track with assignments. For me, tradition pencil and paper is more beneficial for me. It's easier to keep track of things and easier for teachers to receive assignments. Another pro to using paper is that you don't have to deal with technology shutting down and not being able to finish projects or assignments.

  14. Using the nook was a great experience. At first it was really difficult to navigate around in it but it became easier every time I used it. Also it was hard to get used to reading on it cause im really used to paperback books and being able to flip the pages with my hand not just with a push of a button. The highlighting feature on the nook was great while I was reading. I found it so helpful. Usually when im reading I tend to forget a lot about it but as I highlighted I found that I really memorized a lot of the information in the book. I really liked how it let you highlight not just words but also key passages. That was a really great feature. Another feature on the nook that I really like was that you were able to look up words as you were reading that maybe you didn’t know. I found it easier to understand what I was reading if I knew what some of the big words meant. All you had to do was highlight the word and then click look up and it gave you a definition of what it meant. Reading a regular book you definitely wouldn’t be able to do that. I mean unless you got a dictionary and looked up every word but that would take 10 times longer to do that from just one click of a button. I would highly recommend people at AHS to get a nook because I truly believe that it helps you read way better. You can definitely read faster and you will actually be able to understand it and be able to recite what you read. Using a nook really helps the reader understand the book way better than reading a paperback book. I think that using a nook is a great experience and I think everyone should experience reading on one. I believe that if schools are moving more toward technology learning based, that using a nook would be a great piece of technology. I think that us kids in Academy are really advanced in technology that most kids at Arrowhead. I really think that using the nooks was very beneficial to us and if we were to use these skills and devises in the future we are definitely going to be way ahead of all the other kids.
